Premise: Retsuko is just your average Red Panda. She’s 25, single, and working as an accountant at a Japanese trading firm trying to make ends meet. Like many of us, she has to put up with pushy superiors at work, annoying gazelle coworkers, gossipy hippo-moms, all while trying to feel like she’s doing anything worthwhile with her life. And like most of us, she silently goes along with it at work to avoid confrontation but lets out her stress at night by singing Death Metal at a Karaoke Bar. Oh wait, you don’t do that?
TheAwersome’s Thoughts: This show. Is amazing. Despite being a cutesy Sanrio character (company responsible for Hello Kitty) Retsuko’s life is far from cutesy. This one is clearly targeted at Millennials -anyone in their 20-30s really who’s faced down the whole “How on earth do I ‘make it’ in this economy and find life fulfillment while not losing my mind to the dull monotony of work life?” question. Aggretsuko is adorable, hilarious, very fulfilling and rewarding to watch. A good one to show to friends/family who don’t “get” anime as well. A 2nd season has been confirmed, coming some time in 2019.
TLDR: A surprisingly relatable slice of life comedy of the Millennial experience. That happens to feature cute Sanrio characters and death metal.
