Premise: Satoru Mikami is your standard, thirty-something year-old office worker living a monotonous life as a bachelor in Tokyo finds himself getting all kinds of stabbed by a mugger one day. When he regains consciousness, he’s been reincarnated as a blob of slime in an unfamiliar world, but discovers he has the ability to devour anything and mimic its appearance and abilities. He then stumbles upon the sealed Catastrophe-level monster “Storm Dragon” Veldora who had been sealed away for the past 300 years for devastating a town to ashes. Sympathetic to his predicament, Satoru befriends him, promising to assist in destroying the seal. In return, Veldora bestows upon him the name Rimuru Tempest to grant him divine protection.
Now, liberated from the mundanities of his past life, Rimuru embarks on a fresh journey with a distinct goal in mind. As he grows accustomed to his new physique, his gooey antics ripple throughout the world, gradually altering his fate.
TheAwersome’s Thoughts: This doesn’t stray too far from the typical Isekai fantasy of transferring to another world and being ridiculously overpowered, with a handful of girls fighting for your attention. The difference, however, is that Rimuru uses his powers to make life better for himself and those around him, rather than solely being a badass that humiliatingly destroys cocky bad guys. As such, there’s a far more comfortable and positive energy to the whole show (think Parks & Rec vs The Office), with occasional touching cry moments.
TLDR: A quality Isekai with a fun and positive energy.
There is a super comfy spinoff series that takes place before the second season called “The Slime Diaries.”
The second half of the season starts to feel a little repetitive with the formula of “Rimuru meets and befriends a town/people who are apprehensively hostile but then join in alliance” but quickly shakes things up and sets up some juicy forebodings for Season 2.
